For the pioneers working the high country around Falls Creek the Bogong High Plains became a popular summer grazing destination and many cattlemen’s huts are still extant. Wallace’s Hut, built in 1889 from snow gum slabs and woollybutt shingles, is one of the oldest and well known of these huts. Here the angular shapes of the hut contrast with the gentle curve of the snow gums surrounding it. But time has softened the colours and textures of the hut, and it now sits as one with the land, melded with the fluidity of the Australian landscape.
