Dotted across the plains west of the Flinders Ranges are the ruins of homes built by European settlers who dreamt of starting a new life there. But the land is harsh and dry and the settlers, not understanding the nature of the land or how to live with it, failed. They left their homes, huts they had built of rocks and layered on top of the ancient land, stone fortresses they hoped would protect them from them the land’s strength. The story of the attempts of European farmers to layer and impose their will on the land is shown here by the straight and angular window through which the beauty of the land is a distant view, almost a mirage.
