The simplicity and serenity of the seascape on Heron Island is emphasised by the complexity of the limbs of this driftwooded tree. Beneath the smooth surface of the shallow lagoon surrounding the island I saw a reversed image - the complexity and energy of the underwater world was marred by stalks of deathly grey-white coral. The coral bleaching that had occurred on many parts of the northern reef had moved south to Heron. We fear for the future of the reef with the devastating effects of climate change.
