The snow gums of the high country are under significant pressure from climate change. The drying of the climate has had a twofold effect. The native longicorn beetle prefers to lay its eggs in moisture stressed trees, growing up to 75% faster under these conditions, causing dieback. This dieback, combined with the drying of the climate, increases the prevalence and severity of bush fires, resulting in localized collapse of the forest.
